Casula: Our Protected Sanctuary

Casula is a one-of-a-kind shelter for women and children seeking sanctuary from intimate partner abuse. It's part of our larger Comadres ecosystem, meaning residents access our library, apothecary, farm, and community events.

  • Casula is a sanctuary for women and their children that provides a whole ecosystem of care.

When a woman arrives at Casula seeking safety from relationship abuse or violence, she enters into:

    • A protected, private space designed with the intention to restore autonomy & create opportunities in a safer place to rest, heal & transform.

    • A team of trauma-informed, skillful Comadres who understand healing and abuse

    • Access to our library, apothecary, farm, and community resources.

    • Opportunities to learn, heal, and rebuild her sense of self.

    • A community that welcomes her children, honours her timeline, and respects her choices.

  • We are a skillful, trauma-informed team skillful guided by these core values:

Acolhimento (Welcoming Care) Every woman who arrives is welcomed with respect, dignity, and the assumption that she knows what's best for herself. We create space for her healing, on her timeline, in her way.

Trauma-Informed Approach We understand that abuse damages a woman's sense of safety and agency. Everything we do—from the physical space to how we interact—is designed to support her as she rebuilds her sense of choice and safety.

Consent-Based Participation No mandatory programs. No shame. No judgment about her timeline or choices. She decides what support looks like: therapy, workshops, time on the farm, library access, herbal consultations, or simply rest and space.

Community-Embedded Healing She is not healing in isolation. She is part of a larger community where volunteers, other residents, staff, and the land itself all contribute to restoring her sense of belonging.

Ongoing Community Residents who leave Casula stay connected. We support long-term healing and integration into community, because recovery doesn't end when someone leaves the sanctuary.

  • We do this work because:

    Abuse fractures belonging.

When a woman experiences relationship abuse, she doesn’t just lose safety—she loses connection to community, sense of self, and hope. The impact ripples outward: her children, her family, her entire community.

The system needs help to support more women. Many institutional shelters are far from the community where a woman lives. This means that choosing to leave an abusive relationship also means leaving neighbours, friends, family, jobs, or children’s schools. Having a community-based shelter that serves its community’s residents means a woman can receive more integral support while still staying connected to the place she lives, as she deserves. When a woman comes to Casula, she is welcomed into a whole web of caring community members. Here she can receive the holistic support that actually transforms lives. This kind of loving care can make the difference between getting short-term help and actually healing.

Sanctuary is possible. We believe in creating spaces where women don't just escape—they heal.

Where mothers feel safe, and their children see them whole again.

    Where community strengthens everyone.

Transformation is relational. Healing doesn't happen in isolation. It happens when a woman is seen, respected, welcomed into the community, and surrounded by people who believe in her. When her agency is restored. When she remembers her own wisdom.

Cycles break here. When women heal and thrive. They model possibilities for each other and/or their children. They build healthier relationships. They support other women. They become part of the solution.

This matters to all of us. Every woman who finds sanctuary strengthens our entire community. Every child who sees their mother heal changes what's possible for future generations.
