About: A tall, robust herbaceous perennial with large toothed leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers, growing 0.9-2 m. The thick, branching root is aromatic, bitter, and mucilaginous.

Parts used: Root and rhizome. Collected in autumn, dried, and used as tea, decoction, tincture, or in powdered form.

Traditional uses:

  • European, Greek, and Roman medicine for coughs, bronchitis, asthma, and chest congestion

  • Used for digestive weakness, parasitic worms, and as a general tonic

  • Considered a warming, drying, expectorant remedy for "cold" respiratory conditions

Modern uses:

  • Coughs with thick mucus, bronchitis, and asthma (expectorant action)
